"I am basically a one man show when it comes to my mom. I had a home health aide, but it was a couple hours 4 days a week. It gave me an extra set of hands to help shower my mom ( usually every other day, unless she had an accident ) The Day by Day program gives me 5 hours in said given day. I am able to go to work for those 5 hours...but more importantly, it gives me 5 hours that I am "off the clock" with my mom. That clock has 24 hours in each day. Even when she is sleeping, I've got a baby monitor on my night stand. Those 5 hours allows me to be a better care giver. When the bus shows up in the afternoon, I am mentally fresh. I am not burnt out because I've been chasing her out of the trash all day (or such). Those days, for a few hours I have a little bit of a normal life back, and that recharges my mental battery, so I can be a better care giver."
